Discover the fascinating ecosystems of Tortuguero National Park, Arenal Volcano and Manuel Antonio National Park.

Day 2: San Jose - Tortuguero National Park
Today brings dormant volcanos and crater lakes as we journey through Braulio Carrillo National Park en route to the Caribbean lowlands. Along the way, take in mountain vistas and Caribbean-style villages. Later, discover the wonders of Tortuguero National Park’s rainforest as you cruise the rivers and canals with an expert guide. Enjoy a 2-night stay at an eco-lodge surrounded by lush tropical forest and an array of wildlife. Learn more about your surroundings during a visit to the world’s first green turtle research station. Here, dedicated scientists are working to protect the turtle’s nesting habitat and eggs. This evening, join your fellow travellers for a welcome reception and dinner.

Day 3: Tortuguero National Park
Get your camera ready. Set out on an early morning bird-watching excursion that explores the myriad of local and migratory birds that flock to this area. Next, embark on a nature cruise through the park – keep an eye out for howler monkeys, sloths, toucans and caimans. Tortuguero National Park, a study in biology, protects over 350 species of birds and mammals. Savour time to seek out green macaws and some of Costa Rica’s endangered animals, including jaguars, tapirs, ocelots, cougars, river otters and even manatees.

Day 4: Tortuguero National Park – Sarapiquí
Take to the water again and embark on a leisurely boat ride to the mainland as we travel to the Sarapiquí region, one of the world’s most important research regions for tropical rainforests. Arrive at your eco-lodge nestled in the rainforest and surrounded by towering Almendro trees, howler monkeys and keel billed toucans. After check in, visit a cacao plantation where you’ll discover the history and continuing importance of cacao to Central America’s economy. Observe the process of producing chocolate from the cacao bean and sample the delicious finished product. Enjoy dinner at a local biological reserve before returning to your hotel.

Day 5: Sarapiquí
Visit an organic pineapple plantation to learn about the various types of this exotic fruit and taste why Costa Rican pineapples are among the world’s best. Then experience the region from a different perspective on an exhilarating Sarapiquí River rafting adventure. Return to your rainforest lodge for free time to hike through the deep green forest or simply relax in a hammock and take in the nature around you before enjoying a traditional Costa Rican dinner later this evening.

Day 6: Sarapiquí - Arenal Volcano
Begin the day engulfed in nature with an early morning bird watching tour along the natural forest trails and nearby stream. Later, behold the spectacular views of Arenal Volcano and absorb the tranquility of your surroundings as you begin a 3-night stay at your resort featuring panoramic views of the volcano.

Day 7: Arenal Volcano
This morning, experience the rainforest from the treetops on a guided walking tour along Arenal’s hanging bridges. Then, the choice is yours! Embark on one of Costa Rica’s most thrilling zip lining experiences and take in one-of-a-kind views of the Arenal rainforest. Or, enjoy a moderate hike along the trails of Arenal Volcano National Park; cross lava fields and pause to enjoy spectacular views of the volcano.

Day 8: Arenal Volcano
Enjoy a day at leisure. This morning you may take an optional river safari down the Peñas Blancas River. For the more adventurous, an exhilarating white water rafting expedition on the San Blas River is also available. Or, simply explore the resort or relax in the soothing waters of one of the region’s hot springs. This evening, roll up your sleeves for a hands-on cooking demonstration; then savour the local flavours of Costa Rica during a traditional dinner.

Day 9: Arenal Volcano - Tarcoles - Manuel Antonio National Park
Head to the Pacific Coast today. Along the way, stop for a jungle crocodile safari and bird watching excursion. Hop aboard a safari boat to explore the remarkable mangrove ecosystem of the Rio Grande of Tarcoles, home to one of the world’s largest wild crocodile populations. View waterfowl, iguanas, and over fifty varieties of native birds, including the very rare scarlet macaw. Later we continue to the world-renowned Manuel Antonio National Park to check into our resort just outside the park. Soak up the sweeping views and take in the sunset overlooking the park and the Pacific Ocean before dining this evening.

Spend your time walking the forest trails in search of the three-toed sloth, agoutis, squirrel monkeys and iguanas; or take a swim in the inviting blue waters.
